Solid Color is Not Always Neutral:
The rug is often the last consideration in a space. There is a school of thought that the rug decision should be made first, and all of the furniture color, pattern and design decision hinge around the initial rug selection. In reality, the rug is almost the final item purchased for a space. Because of this, it is almost an afterthought. The temptation is to select a rug that is “neutral” or all one color so it is not “too busy”. The result is often a room that looks imbalanced because of the overall heaviness of saturated color.
A room sometimes needs boldness to be balanced. One way to achieve this is to accentuate the bold accents in a room. These accents are often black, and can be found in fireplace inserts, window casings, stair railings or even architectural elements in a kitchen. Using black in an otherwise neutral rug, helps balance out the architectural features in a room, while staying neutral and organized. It also adds a crispness to the design and helps the furniture stand out. Next time you are considering a rug and feel a temptation to select a solid color, consider adding black and a bold pattern. You might be surprised by how serene and quiet your space becomes.
